European Touches ~ Vol. 5 ~ A night at the Sixday-Races in Zurich

After spending two days in London to see a couple of bands play, get some Christmas shopping done

and to stop at the Rapha headquarters (write-up coming soon), I took a plane out of the hell hole that is

London‘s Heathrow Airport to cross the English Channel again and made it to

Zurich, Switzerland late that Saturday afternoon.

20101204-IMG_1065

I had a ticket for that night’s Sixdays races in Zurich‘s „Hallenstadion“ and was excited about going, but

I got even more excited when I turned on my computer and checked my email.

Jon had scored me a lastminute mediapass for that night – awesome!

I only had enough time to drop my bags at the hotel, get something to drink and

charge my camera for a little bit before I took a tram to get to the arena where the races take place.

20101204-IMG_1030

The event starts at 6pm and runs until about 2am for six days in a row – hence the name „Sixday Races“.

Every night numerous different races take place like Sprints, Madison Races, Keirin Sprints

or different types of Motor-paced Races, so-called „Steherrennen“. Some of the race formats allow

teams of two riders, only the sprinters compete on their own. Points add up over the week and the overall

winners are announced after the final day of racing Sunday afternoon.

Some of the more notable Pro-riders included the all German team made up of Danilo Hondo

(Team Lampre) and Robert Bartko (former Rabobank and Deutsche Telekom squad),

the latter also being a two time gold medalist at the 2000 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

These two guys took the overall win on Sunday.

20101205-IMG_1123

Also notable was Swiss Franco Marvulli, former World-Champion and silver medalist at the 2004

Olympic games. Unfortunately the team made up of two riders from the US, Daniel Holloway and

Colby Pearce, didn‘t do very well and only placed 10th out of 12 teams.

But besides all the PRO-riders, two young and talented Sprinters from Germany, Sebastian Döhrer

(sponsored by „Keirin Berlin“, see Euro Touches Vol. 4) and Philipp Thiele, caught my attention.

They were probably my favourites to watch that night.

20101204-IMG_1054

In between races I had the chance to speak to some of the riders and mechanics and it was great to listen

and chat with them about the event. I also met two carpenters from Germany who work for a little

company from Bremen. These guys build wooden velodromes all over the world, including the velodrome

for this year‘s Commonwealth Games in India – they don‘t have to do „normal“ stuff anymore, because they

are so busy building ´dromes. In Zurich for example, 30 people have 48h to build the velodrome,

this is incredible! And even these guys knew everything about track racing,

because they have been part of the „family“ for years.

Along with the races there was a little bike expo in the foyer, this years exhibitors included BMC, Focus

and the Swiss distributor for Cinelli bikes and merchandise.

20101204-IMG_0958

Even now, a few days later, I am still overwhelmed by the atmosphere of this event. Not only did I get to

see great track racing, but I was able to talk to a number of really nice people.

I couldn‘t believe that seconds before a race even the riders were still cool

and would answer my questions and let me take pictures of them.

It was a great experience and I‘d love to go back again next year.

Many more pictures can be found on the European Touches flickr.

The guys at radsportphoto.net shot an awesome video there, too.

DLV End of Season Party & GoldSprints

Dick Lane Velodrome Goldsprints

Saturday night was the annual Dick Lane Velodrome End Of Season Party hosted by the Marlay House

This event is not to be missed for all the regular competitors at the track, unless you’re at Elite Nats…

BOTH of the DLV Rider of the Year recipients, Evelyn Ewing & Dan Holt were in LA representing!

Pictured above are two of Dan’s teammates: Joe Eldrige & Phil Southerland of Team Type 1.

Dick Lane Velodrome Goldsprints

DLV veteran and Marlay proprietor, Darren Comer faces off against Tyler Grahovec.

Tyler’s son Seven was proud of his dad’s victory and he also had a go.   Eye of the tiger on that kid!

Dick Lane Velodrome Goldsprints

Below is Lucius Williams, he directed The Keirin. He started racing this season and I look forward to

seeing more from him both on the track and on the big screen!

Dick Lane Velodrome Goldsprints

There were several women’s races.  Complete with cowboy boots and high heels.

Dick Lane Velodrome Goldsprints

Even one of the Marlay’s servers competed!  Pretty impressive to then dive right back into working.

Dick Lane Velodrome Goldsprints

Speaking of impressive.  The director of the track, Jeff Hopkins, after a day of cross racing,

competed against Sneaky Pete Antonvich no-handed holding a New Belgium.

Dick Lane Velodrome Goldsprints

Kept it pretty steady and almost kept up!

Dick Lane Velodrome Goldsprints

I managed a narrow 4th place against my potential 2011 teammates Chris Kelly in 3rd and…

Dick Lane Velodrome Goldsprints

Justin Barber in 2nd.  Justin knows all about narrow margins.

He and I were separated by less than a second in the GoldSprint seed round

and even more dramatic was his .4 point loss to now Points Race National Champ, Dan Holt

for the Rider of the Year award.  Justin did give reigning champ Brian Tester a run for his money

Dick Lane Velodrome Goldsprints

Talk about a Mask of pain! Brian really burned it up to defend his title belt.

Dick Lane Velodrome Goldsprints

He’ll have another chance to compete next weekend during the NACCC Goldsprint Finals!

Below is Jeff announcing Brian’s victory.

Dick Lane Velodrome Goldsprints

A post sprint highlight was the drawing for the coveted Fat Tire cruiser.  Wes Parrish rolled home on it!

Dick Lane Velodrome Goldsprints

Pictured below in black are members of FM:Race, they stomped the Team of the Year competition.

Also photographed are Joe Eldridge & Amy Frank accepting on behalf of their teammates.

In fact, around when this photo was being taken, Dan Holt won Elite Track National Points Race in LA!

Finally, Jeff asked everyone to lend a hand and contribute to getting the track painted.

You can donate here.

More photos from the evening are here.  Thank you again to Darren & co. for hosting & Jeff for directing!

Dick Lane Velodrome Goldsprints

This season was the best I have seen.  It was packed with highlights and heavy duty racing.

Competitors traveled to our track from far and wide. Everyone got faster and smarter.

I feel that this proposal is spot on and feel it is a great way to end the season and this post.

See everyone next year on the track and before that at Cross Races and Standard Rides!

European Touches ~ Vol. 4 ~ Berlin

Finally, after three posts of „European BS“ a.k.a. places you maybe never happen to visit, I want to tease

you with some info about three amazing bike shops in Berlin.

Some of you might have been to Berlin before and maybe some of you are thinking about going – and let

me tell you, you really should go and spent time over here – this city is buzzing!

And if all the sight-seeing and partying leaves time for an afternoon of bike shop hopping,

these would be the places worth checking out:

20

My first stop was at Keirin Berlin in the „Kreuzberg“ district, just across from subway-station

„Schlesisches Tor“. I went there for the first time over 2 years ago with Stacey and Jon, when they

spent their honeymoon in Europe and I really loved the shop. I think Mortimer, the shop owner, told

us back then that „Keirin Berlin“ opened a little before Trackstar in New York and therefore may be

the oldest trackbike shop.

And you can tell that this shop has been around for years – countless little pieces of „Keirin memorabilia“

can be found in the shop and some insane bikes from actual racers are hanging on the walls, including

an old Cinelli-tandem, which was ridden by GDR racers back in the day.

23

They have a number of old track- and original Keirin-frames in stock, I saw a nice looking „3Rensho“

sitting there for example and there was a „Diamant“ frame (GDR fame) hanging from the ceiling.

New frames, bags, parts, hats, some kits you name it – they have it all!

It is a great place and even if you don‘t want to buy something for your bike, you can always go

there for a coffee and buy a magazine.  Pictured below is Issue 1 of Fahrstil, a German cycling journal.

31

Next stop was „Goldsprint“ – unfortunately a little harder to find and quite a walk away from

Keirin Berlin. Shop-owner Alex had been busy blogging about Berlin’s fixed gear scene and after

building bikes for a number of friends he decided to start his own business.

Apparently he moved from his parents basement to the current showroom location about 2 months ago.

Since this place just opened this summer not a whole lot of things are in stock, but of course Alex

will order whatever you want. He sells brands like Veloheld, Leader bikes, some sick frames by polish

brand TenFour and has many BLB parts. He is also offering a custom made steel frame, handmade

in Europe from Columbus tubing, for around 700 Euros.

29

The next day I made it to Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg to check out Cicli Berlinetta. A friend told me about

it and I was expecting a lot, but what I saw there was even better! This shop is all about the beauty of

Italian bikes and components. They probably have well over a hundred vintage steel frames and bikes

hanging there – Chesini, Coppi, Colnago, De Rosa, Gios and the list goes on.

07

I have never seen this many beautiful frames in such great condition in one location before.

These guys also sell their own great looking custom made steel frames for either road or track.

And again this is all about Italy, so you can get their frames in a funky green-white-red colourway.

18

A „Cicli Berlinetta“ branded wheelset made from Ambrosio/Miche parts is also available in different

colours and available for 270 Euros.

Leaving the shop I sent Jon a text message saying „I just left the most amazing bike shop ever!“

Some more pictures can be found on the European Touches flickr.

Keirin Culture, Home of Kazane Bikes in Roanoke

IMGP4569

The last stop on my road trip thru DC, NJ & PA was in Roanoke to visit my long time friend

Stratton Delaney of Keirin Culture & Kazane Bikes.  I’ve mentioned before that I first

bought my UNO from Stratton way back in 2005. ( Again, HIDEOUS bar wrap, I know.)

Both Stratton and I have covered a lot of ground in 5 years and it was nice to finally see him

in his shop which he opened here  in November of 2009, garnering some local press.

IMGP4570

He has his shop stocked and set up uniquely.

That is, that the bikes and parts in stock cover the common basics yet also coveted rarities

and everything is displayed creatively, like the custom display above.

Beyond the inventory and array of eye candy are trinkets from racing in Japan and Korea.

IMGP4574

If Stacey and I hadn’t of been so hungry, I could’ve spent hours trolling around picking

Stratton’s brain about the goodies I found. He’s collected quite the treasure trove in here.

IMGP4573

As you can see he has the shop laid out rather nicely.

Its great for hanging out and easily finding exactly what you need.

IMGP4583

Once I had pulled myself from the brick wall of  Alans and Quattro Assis, I spotted this beauty:

IMGP4577

This Ghibli Rossin is currently on consignment at Keirin Culture for only right at $1000.

That’s COMPLETE not just frame and fork!

I was lucky enough to take it on a test ride the next day & seriously considered bringing it home with me.

IMGP4579

Stratton has been in the cycling game for a long time and has contributed more than he has collected.

Roanoke is lucky to have him and his neighbor Aaron of 611 Cycles.

Aaron had just left for the beach the day we arrived and I was unable to check out his shop.

If you ever find your self near or in Roanoke, be sure to check Keirin Culture and 611 out.

No matter where you are, you should follow Kazane on twitter and follow Aaron’s blog.

More photos from the visit are on my flickr.  I’ll be back next year for the inaugural Starlight Crit!

IMGP4582

Trexlertown, where Ape’n it ain’t all its cracked up to be…

IMGP4229

One of the highlights of my recent roadtrip up north was the chance to race at T-Town. (@thevelodrome)

I love me some DLV but always wondered what it’d be like race at another track.

I knew as soon as I rolled into the parking lot it was gonna be a fast night.

IMGP4243

As you can see above, Valley Preferred Cycling Center Breiningsville, PA is a world class facility.

Athletes from around the world spend their summers training here.

Several of the competitors I saw race that night will actually be heading to London in 2012.

I attended on a Tuesday but it’s the Friday night racing program that has attracted Australians,

Canadians, New Zealanders, Britons, Chileans, Argentines, Italians, Danes,

Germans, French and Russians over the past 30 years.  Read more about the track here.

IMGP4189

I was stoked on the sectioned off infield and was surprised how early racers arrived.

Everyone had their own little zone and diligently prepared to race.

This photo was taken over an hour prior to the first race and it was nearly full.

IMGP4201

There was no organized warm up and riders from all categories rolled around the track.

Some pacelines formed but most simply cruised above the blue line.

IMGP4235

The shot above is from the bridge athletes use to get into the infield.

It is an awesome perspective of the track.

IMGP4254

The Affinity crew was out in force.

None of these guys were part of the entourage that crushed it here in ATL.

I mentioned meeting some of their teammates and look forward making it to Kissena next season.

Before the races began I strolled aroudn the infield and scoped out some sick steeds.

IMGP4248

Here’s a rare mix.  Campy Sheriff Stars with a bmx chain on an epicly rad LOOK frame.

Bam. This bike may have been the craziest on the track all night.

IMGP4246

Next is stout special edition Dolan DF3 belonging to Kamil Kuczynski of the Poland National Team.

The Poland decal caught my eye off the track and Kamil did on the track.

IMGP4253

Kamil was a super nice guy and really blasted it in the sprints that night.

He’d start turning it up off the back, staying the saddle all the way and would fly right off the front!

Kamil has his sights on the Polish Nationals, which are slated for September,

then the European Track Cycling Championships to defend his championship title also in Poland!

Good luck Kamil!

IMGP4261

The front end of the of this Colnago was hard to miss when i first arrived.

IMGP4251

I then noticed the Ritte logo on the racer’s kit.

This was the brand new Team Lion Of Flanders Kit.  (@TeamLOFdotcom)

These pink accent, i was told, was in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Its working because he was hard to miss rolling up front most of the night!

IMGP4267

Another killer bike that I managed to get a shot of was this EMC2 Fluide TKR

Is it just me or is that the highest bottom bracket ever?!

IMGP4270

Of course there was some brutal racing.

I competed in the 10 lap scratch, 25 lap points race & 5 lap handicap.

But, as the title plainly states:  Ape’n it ain’t all its cracked up to be in T-Town.

I have been competing in the A bracket here in Atlanta much of the season and have improved

both in speed and skill due to the caliber of riders I compete against.  Some Wednesday nights are good.

Some are brutal.  But this particular Tuesday up in PA I got my ass handed to me.

IMGP4281

I raced in the 2/3 Stagiares category.

After a disappointing effort in the scratch I changed gears for the points race.

at 48×14 I thought I could place in a sprint or two and sit in.

Well, I placed in the first sprint but fell off the back. FAIL.

And, after dismal results in races 1 and 2, I had a great spot in the handicap and really ape’d it but alas,

did not earn any points.  Don’t let my rough night deceive you. I had a great time and really got a taste

of how fast Trexlertown really is!  When I return I hope to be in much better shape and bring home some points!

IMGP4288

That’s me above in front of the lap counter, feeling the burn!

Pictured below is the Women’s keirin.  That was something else I noticed:  so many women racers!

I look forward to the Women’s field picking up speed here in Atlanta!

For more photos from my night at T-Town check out my flickr and results from the night are here.

2010 DLV Regional Championships Photos

Team Sprint Podium

Killer weekend of racing with a core group of very determined athletes.
Many of which had their sites set on Elites and some successfully qualified!

Beyond Elite qualifying efforts, several athletes managed to smash some DLV records!

Pictured above is the Team Sprint podium and below is the Women’s  Omnium.

First overall in the Women’s Category was Jennifer Schuble, followed by Evelyn Ewing in 2nd & Autumn Wentworth in 3rd.

Jennifer is a US Paralympic World Champion who, in Beijing, won gold in the 500 meter TT; silver in the 3K pursuit and individual time trial!

What an inspirational person! Read more about her accomplishments here on Pez.

Women's

1. Tim 2. Alexander & 3. Dan

The Men’s overall Omnium winner was local racer and Team Type 1 Development Coach Tim Henry with Alexander Gil in 2nd and Tim’s teammate Dan Holt in 3rd.

I slacked on taking photos this past weekend as I was on the heels of a nearly two week long road trip and still have yet to post those photos!

At any rate, podium shots are here and results are here.

A visit to 66fixed in St. Pete

Had a blast tonight with the 66fixed crew

Every time I make it down to Florida to visit family, I always make sure to stop in an check on Michael at

66Fixed.  He opened this shop right around the same time the shop I co-owned did and we have never

had a shortage of topics to discuss throughout the years. So many thing shave changed since 2007 and…

The Shop

…so many things have stayed the same. The bike scene has changed tremendously since 2007 yet the

basics stay the same.  But somethings, like the few Aerospokes hanging in the shop, really symbolize

the changes. Amazing how those even feel retro! 66Fixed has adapted easily over the years to meet

demand & done well! It’ll always be one of my favorite shops to visit & hang out in.

The atmosphere & eye candy better each time.

There’s always more stuff to peruse, lots of people stopping by and did I mention lots of stuff to peruse?

Stocked!

The vibe in the shop is more like one that’s been open for decades yet it still has its ear to the ground for the

latest trends of what to carry while not overlooking the daily essentials that all types of riders will need.

Also in stock are two legendary brands that get lots of real estate in 66Fixed: Cinelli & Dolan.

Both brands have become staples for the streets of St. Pete.  And, I gotta say, the riders have good taste!

MASHSF

Speaking of good taste, look what West Coast immigrant turned bike shop proprietor’s sequel is in stock!

Death Pedal 2 by Kareem Shehab of Loose Nuts Cycles was front and center on the counter. Awesome.

Death Pedal!

Another indicator of this shop’s history is this impressive collection of spoke cards race all over that have all

been sponsored and/or sponsored by Michael. Peek the FM.24.07 next to the dude humping the unicorn.

Spokecards

In stark contrast to recent alleycat memorabilia are treasures from all eras and disciplines of cycling.

Even those espousing accolades of world champion Modolo brakes. Because you gotta slow down to win!

so much character

Also pictured above is one of the shop’s latest jersey designs.

In fact, 66Fixed has several full kits to choose from & they all look great.

Back to the bikes, below is Michael’s carbon Dolan he rode on the toughguy ride.

New Carbon Dolan

Outside was yet another indicator of the shop’s varied clientele.  The bikes inside & outside the shop

spanned the gamut of not only the fixed gear scene but commuters, roadies, CX , MTB and more!

66Fixed has certainly become an invaluable resource for all local rider and i wish Michael many more

years of continued success!  I hope to stop by once more while I am in town. Otherwise, he needs to bring

his Dolan up the DLV.  Maybe at next year’s 24 Hour Race… If there is one?!

those 26s?

If you are ever in St. Petersburg, Be sure to stop by!

The shop

Follow 66Fixed on twitter @66Fixed and at 66fixed.com Check more photos of the shop here.

BFF NYC 2010

Recently Stafford ( @srbiv ) and Dawn took a trip to New York City for the 10th anniversary of the Bicycle Film Festival.  Not only was his his first time attending a Bicycle Film Festival, it was his first time in New York on a (track) bike. AND this is his first post on the site! Below are the highlights of their trip:

Most of Friday was spent riding around getting acquainted with Brooklyn and the Lower East Side. We hit up several shops including Chari & Co (below left) and Affinity (below right). Dick Lane Velodrome fans might remember the several riders from Affinity that recently dominated “The Keirin” pro series races.

Saturday we headed to the festival to see a documentary about the Race Across America called Bike Dreams. The films follows several riders along the longest and most demanding bike race in the world. Stephen Auerbach did an amazing job of capturing the race’s highs and lows. I strongly recommend checking this film out if you get a chance.

After the film we walked out into the street fair, that was now in full swing outside the theater. Vendors of all sorts had tents set up showcasing their wares. We ran into Pikey bags from south Florida who were also featuring their friend Head Set Clothing’s hoodies (below left).

We also ran into the guys from Dodici (below right). You may remember the phat loot guys gave away some at the Death Pedal 2 premiere.

Geekhouse was also in attendance. Sadly one of their bikes had been stolen the night before.

My official best of show for the street festival goes Quiros Cycles. Prolly did a write up about Armando who makes these beautiful bikes. Armando is a super nice guy and his love for bikes shows through in his craftsmanship.

The street fair also featured trick contest for all types of bikes. The BMX guys had some mad ups.

Speaking of tricks, we ran into this guy:

Sunday night brought the premiere of Empire. We were lucky enough to get tickets to the second showing before it sold out. This was an amazing film. While they didn’t deviate much from the MASH formula they showed off some of the sickest fixed gear riding captured on video in the crazy traffic of New York. Empire has a great mix of fast riding and tricks, along with a killer soundtrack. After having a few days to get acquainted with riding in The City, this film seemed to inspire me to ‘ape’ it a little bit harder as our time winded down on a great trip to a great city hosting the best event I have ever attended.

Team Type 1 & AeroCat Brought the Heat ~ Weds Nite Recap #7

Emile & Joe

PROs Emile Abraham of Aerocat Racing & Joe Eldridge of Team Type 1 raced this past Wednesday.

Emile is no stranger to the Dick Lane Velodrome.  He has won many a race here and around the world.

Not only can he completely crush you in a sprint but he can ‘out dance anyone!’

Check out this interesting interview with Emile on PezCyclingNews from last April.

Joe

Birmingham native Joe Eldridge ( @JoeEldridge ) kept Emile on his toes throughout the  evening’s races.

Like Emile,  Joe is a seasoned sprinter ready to ape it a a moment’s notice, Joe is also one of the founding

member’s of Team Type 1.

He and “fellow collegiate cyclist Phil Southerland ( @PhilSoutherland ),

teamed up and started the team in 2004.  Two years later, Team Type 1

won the first of two corporate team division titles in

the Race Across America (RAAM)”

(text from here)

Team Type 1 & 2 are back to claim victory in RAAMGood Luck guys! Follow @TeamType1 on twitter.

Emile & Joe

Above is Pete Antonvich of the EPTC bringing home a solid 3rd place in the his race of choice.

This past Wednesday was the night of the Miss & Out.  It is this race that he earned his moniker:

Sneaky Pete!

He had had his work cut out for him though!

It was an especially agressive race and though I made my way to the front,

I quickly found myself a few wheels and elbow blows back and several laps later pulled.

Pete held off the whole field only to bravely face two PRO sprinters.  The bell lap was a real EPIC one!

Emile & Joe

Joe had the lead and was making Emile really work.

Emile & Joe

R I G H T at the line Emile brings the hammer down.

Emile & Joe

It was so close!  Such a fast night of racing in the A field thanks to these guys and the rest of the racers who

really cranked to match pace.  The tempo was a real grinder. I got some point of the line and held on!

Daniel's Cannondale

Above is Daniel Broshar’s Cannondale.  Daniel & his Cannondale were my ticket to 2nd in the scratch.

Daniel very casually attacked with just under 3 laps to go and I was the only guy to chase.

I generally can’t not chase.  It often ends with me off the back or even, at best, in the sprint, top 10 MAYBE.

But I ape’d it, got on Daniel’s wheel and we took turns pulling. The peloton, with Emile & Joe leading,

gained very quickly but we held em off and, at the line, Daniel took first from me.  Nice one Daniel!

Justin

Wednesday night regular and FM Racer Justin Barber (above) went head to head with Matt Lipscomb

(pictured in front below) of the Fulton Flyers.  Matt sandbagged the B field with a fury, taking 3 1st’s.

Matt Lipscomb

After really cleaning up  this week. Do I smell a CAT up for Matt?  Guess we’ll find out soon!

Scott on defense

Above is Scott Patton of Fixed Gear Fever keeping a wary eye on the contenders.

The B field was super FAST too!  I’ll be eager to see how Record Night pans out next week!

Howard

In the C field, Howard Buckley ( @HowlinThurston ), pictured above, came in second behind

Joey Schoenfeld of the Fulton Flyers.  It was Joey’s first night of racing on his new yellow steel steed.

I think he went from a 54 or something to a 64 size frame! Not sure of the builder. Way to ‘break’ it in!

New bike day

All in all a great night of racing after two weeks off for me. Already looking forward to next week!

Results for the evening are here, more photos here and the previsou recap is here.

Don’t miss the Keirin Premier TONITE!
