Breaking Records & Cat’n Up
Wednesday Night Recap
Installment #2

Wednesday Night Racing

The second installment of Wednesday Night racing at Dick Lane Velodrome proved to be an even fiercer evening of racing than last week.

Not only was it Record Night but the itinerary also called for Chariot Races as well, a surefire crowd-pleaser combo and a tried & true recipe for white-knuckled track competition.

Justin

Pictured above is Justin Barber of FM RACE.

He is well on his way to cat’ing up to the B’s after tonight’s performance.

After a less successful showing last week he came back swinging this week and cleaned up!

Follow him on Twitter @atlbiker.

Speaking of cat’ing up. Looks like my time has come.

Although I will still have my same little spot in the infield,

I’ll find myself shoulder to shoulder with some ‘new’ familiar faces next week in the A’s!

We’ll see how I do.

I certainly know who I am up against!

Joey, Oscar & Thomas

Pictured above are (from left to right) Joey Rosskopf, Oscar Clark & Thomas Brown all of Team Mountain Khakis powered by Jittery Joes. Follow the team on Twitter @cyclemk.

These guys are brutal contenders individually on the road & track but as team they are all but unstoppable.

Tonight’s victories for the Mountain Khaki’s crew were that much sweeter due to a record breaking 10 mile race.

IMGP1828

Serendipitously, Joey’s father, Ken Rosskopf of KenBikeLaw , was manning the bell and had a front row seat for his son’s victory.

IMGP1829

Joey, Oscar, & Thomas really put themselves through the wringer and ultimately dropped the rest of the A racer field.

After the B field’s  missed by a minute failure to break the 8 mile record,

hopes rose and tensions mounted for this 3 man paceline.

Most everyone was certain they had it but by how much?

Broken Record

What?! A whole minute! Insane! And what a killer effort. See all DLV record holders here.

Congratulations Oscar, Thomas & Joey for crushing it.

Joey, Oscar & Thomas

Results for the evening are here, more photos are here and last week’s recap is here.

There’s only a few more weeks before the first Pro Race Series Event, ETHIC, Inc. Presents the Keirin.

Everyone will be stepping up their game leading up to that.

I know I have ALOT of preparing to do!

See everyone next week!

Death Pedal 2 Atlanta Premiere Recap

IMGP1733

Death Pedal 2 premiered here in Atlanta last night. It was a fundraiser for the upcoming Atlanta NACCCs.

With a massive turnout, sponsors stacked to the ceiling, free beer and of course, a spectacular film, the evening a huge blast start to finish.

Pictured above is the film’s director Kareem Shehab getting gnar on a box he built just for occasion.

Wells

The event’s space accommodated plenty of space for tricks and several riders took advantage of that.

In addition to the boxes there was a quarter pipe. Alex Johnson, pictured below, represented Atlanta along with…

Alex

Chris

Chris Tavel of Loose Nuts from Athens.

IMGP1726

He suffered a substantial blow to his rear wheel.

Good thing he sets the bar for wheelbuilding in Georgia and beyond.

Chris

My good friend Bobby Costello got on Kareem’s bike and immediately busted out some old school moves.

Bobby

There were SO MANY sponsors! The raffle was a huge hit and I doubt anyone left without something!

Throughout the entire evening sick prizes from around the world were awarded and tossed to the crowd.

IMGP1715

After some heavy duty delays due to technical difficulties, the film finally began.

I had missed the premiere in Richmond during NAHBS and had been looking forward to this for a long time.

Franco

Franco of XTM Online hooked up the visuals and helped sort out the audio issues to get the ball rolling.

IMGP9688

The crowd had been patiently waiting as well and most everyone stuck it out and waited to see what they had came for.

Death Pedal 2 featured footage that, in my opinion, tops the genre.

Not only does the film feature riders from coast to coast like Wonka, Congo, Corey Vulture, Matt Spencer, AJ Austin and Eric Puckett but cinematically its in a league of its own.

I totally agree with Bic Control, that the soundtrack is indeed killer and combined with epic footage and Kareem’s animation,

Death Pedal 2 is like no other fixed gear film you’ve seen.

Torey ‘Hfwido’ Thorton, pictured above, hails from Macon, GA.

Torey really pulled out all the stops for his part in Death Pedal 2. Of course it was rad to see lots of spots from here in Atlanta but the real jammer, the  mondo kicker that that the film ends with, is what took the cake!

Torey also runs a blog called wrahw.  Check it out!

IMGP9696

Once the film ended there was even MORE prizes to be had.

It seemed like they certainly saved the best for last and one lucky guy got real freaking lucky:

IMGP9705

My friend Scott’s homie Brien musta bought all the golden raffle tickets because he went home with a VAGX bag, Dodici rims, a Fabric Horse Belt. EDIT: AND an Eighth Inch Scrambler! WTF?!

IMGP9709

Another prize highlight was Sean of SKIDPHOTO, who won a Volume Cutter from Shop Cultur.

Yet another Cutter to add to his stable!

IMGP9710

Ok, that’s a ‘wrahwp’! Thank you to Kareem and everyone who rode the film for such an epic movie.

Thanks to everyone who attended and made the event such a success! More photos are here.

Make sure you attend a premiere nearest you or get your very own DP2 DVD here.

p.s. if you won the Ria’s, Sauced or Stone Soup gift certificates, I forgot to bring em! Send me an email to claim your prize!

Ok, see everyone at the track on Wednesday! dicklanevelodrome.com

Wednesday Night Recap
Installment #1

The weather was certainly ideal, turnout was totally solid and the racing was exceptionally superb tonight at Dick Lane Velodrome.

It was great to catch up with so many people I had not seen since last season, to scope familiar rigs and brand new bikes.
Below are some examples. A Fuji with the ever increasingly rare Kazane race wheels that belongs to Chris Kelly, of FM Race and below that a totally smoking custom Tiemeyer with all the fixins belonging to Carleton Hall, a racer for Peachtree Bikes.

Chris's Fuji

Carleton's Tiemeyer

Before it got real dark I stepped out into turn one to catch some shots of the C races. I know several of these guys will be cat’ing up soon!

The C category may sometimes get a bad rap for an occasional squirrely maneuver or honest novice mistake. But tonight these guys were crushing it with fierce competition yet all C races flew by without any “awhoa! Stay!” yelps.

Even very recently battle scarred sprinter Howard Buckley (below) who was involved in an unfortunate spill Tuesday night here, was in there mixin’ it up without missing a beat!

Howard

I had been nervous all day. It’d been since last season that I had even been on the track.

I know I have been “training” but who has been training more? or training less? I saw familiar faces and new ones but didn’t know who’d be the ones to watch out for.

Luckily, I wasn’t in there flying solo.

My good friend and Kazane Racing teammate  Stafford Brooke (below) was out there with me.  We accumulated some points towards the 2010 DLV Team of the Year prize.

Stafford

It was our first night sporting our new kits and competing as a team. In hindsight we could have work together much more in the Tempo.

But, we had a good first night racing as a team and will continue to improve.

Teammates

I think tonight set the precedent for some really fast racing this season. Lots of people have stepped up their game and will do so even more after appraising their competitors tonight.
I’ll be eagerly looking forward to next week and will expect even more riders to come down to get in on the action and prepare for the upcoming first Pro Race Series event, ETHIC, Inc. Presents the Keirin.

Nice first night at the Track

Nice first night at the Track

Quick thank you to Darren of the Marlay for convincing me to do my first Madison too!

Full results are already available here.  More Photos are here.

See everyone next week.

The Track Season 2010 at Dick Lane Velodrome

Trent Wilson on Kazanes

Its about to really heat up down in East Point as the 2010 Season gets underway. Tonight will be the first Wednesday night race for the A, B & C Category racers.
Last night already ushered in the initial Master’s, Beginner’s & Women’s races.

Some classic photos are featured above of Trent Wilson of Jittery Joes rolling on Kazanes and below of Iona Winter-Parks of Colavita.

Not only do I plan to bring the hammer down with Stafford Brooke on behalf of Team Kazane but I aim to introduce twotoneatl.com as a weekly source for velodrome race coverage and commentary.

Feel free to submit photos, comments, racing tips etc. to be included.

IMGP5258
Leading the peloton above is Joe Eldridge of Team Type 1 and my good friend Billy Santana, former teammate of mine with the East Point Track Club.

See everyone tonight at the the track!

Mission Worshop Visit & Latest Vandal Video

Bags on couch

My visit to Mission Workshop’s headquarters was one of the highlights of my recent trip to SF.

Their bags had caught my eye quite some time ago and I knew I needed to see them in person.
Rob shows us the Vandal

Rob, of Mission Workshop, gave my friend Philipp & I the full run through.

He walked us through every functional nook & cranny. The Vandal, their flagship bag is steeped with practical features.

Its nearly impossible to fathom its potential by merely looking photos of them in a couch.

Couch shot 2

For that reason and the fact that Rob & co. can’t provide personal tours of the Vandal & Rambler for every customer, they have recently released a very well polished short film depicting the broad capacity for various everyday uses Mission Workshop bags possess. Check it out:

Grocery Run – Vandal Cargo Backpack from Mission Workshop on Vimeo.

Needless to say, Philipp & I left with bags.

His Vandal is with him on the streets of Freiburg, Germany and I brought a Rambler home to my wife, which she naturally was delighted to receive and even more delighted to use!

They have a messenger bag in the pipeline (photos of samples above) and an even larger bag.  Stay tuned! www.missionworkshop.com

San Francisco | Day 3

Cable car ride to the bike rental

We woke up hella early and caught the trolley straight to Bike and Roll. for, what we knew would be, an EPIC journey north to Muir Woods.

En Route #fb

It started pretty chill. We took in the views as we made our way to the bridge. I stopped like 4 times to lower my seat. I was missing my Brooks swift badly. We were on some sweet Trek road bikes equipped with 105, Ultegra & Tiagra mixed groups. Triple cranksets. Yeah, we would need those.

Making our way.

This is me likely about half way there. We took a S T E E P route in through Saulsalito. I will post to the route soon if I can. Locals’ll laugh for sure. We cut our way through neighborhoods to Shoreline to Muir Woods road. One street was call ‘Rising Road’. Yeah, no shit!

Made it!

Alot of the really good shots are all on my camera but rest assured there are some real rad photos coming soon of the ride there and back. The descent into Muir Woods was one of the most intense descents I have ever done. Next to barreling down the Pyrenees’ on a fully loaded tandem. Below is a shot of Philipp once we finally made it. Talk about stoked!

Made it!

Muir Woods was absolutely awe inspiring. This was Philipp’s first time seeing Red Wood trees. Cathedral Grove was amazing. there were hardly any people there and all you could do was take it all in silently breathing the wonderful forest air. Well, after some food and a short stroll, we got back on the bikes and climbed back towards SF on Shoreline/ HWY 1. This allowed us to avoid climbing Muir Woods road.

Muir Woods

Chuey!

We met up with Chuey of Chuey Brand back at Zeitgeist for a few brews and to catch up. I love Chuey and his hats. We first met here in SF back at NACCCs 2007 and I have like 10 of his caps. Look out for a Twotone x Chuey project on the horizon! We dipped from Zeitgeist around the corner to visit our friends Mission Workshop one more time. More about that soon!

Heading to Mojo tomorrow.

We also met John of Mojo Bicycle Cafe at Zeitgeist. Philipp talked beer brewing with him & Chuey. Chuey has been spending alot of time brewing recently. I can’t wait to try one. We will be stopping by Mojo and Push Bike later today.

Back at the hostel. Put these treks trough the ringer!

Yesterday ended with us collapsing back at the hostel after some Prohibition beer & Indian food. Today is our last day in town. We’ll likely take it easy but still hope to see alot more of SF.

First Day, San Francisco. EPIC.

Marathon Cycle Race

This is my buddy Philipp after bringing the hammer down on armsprints. Just one of the rad highlights on our first day here in SF.

Box Dog! #fb

It started with some loaners from Andy at Box Dog. They were gnarly machines. Look:

Box Dog loaner

We stopped by to see mthe good guys at Mission Workshop.

@missionworkshop!

Then, some epic descending/climbing…

Having second thoughts...

Which earned us some epic views…

What a view!

Epic amounts of music at Amoeba.

Amoeba Music

Then we visited Dustin at Cadence …Failed to take some blackberry shots so photos from this visit’ll be up soon.

Then, like any hard working day in SF should, it ended at Zeitgeist.

Zeitgeist

More photos from the trip will be up on my flickr as the trip continues.

NAHBS ~ Day One Photo Sampler

IMGP0782

NAHBS is on a entirely different level this year and every aspect from craftsmanship to presentation to attendance to atmosphere has raised the bar.

I am already late getting down to the show for Day 2 but here is a sample:

IMGP0727

IMGP0731

IMGP0747

IMGP0690

There are several more on the Flickr with tons more plus a full write up with builder highlights and event coverage coming up soon!

The Road to NAHBS

Stacey, Otto, Delilah & I made our way through a brutal onslaught of deranged drivers and a several mile long bumper to bumper bummer to get to the North American Bicycle Show. This is my second NAHBS and I am STOKED!

The ride was essentially smooth because our little guy, Otto, was either smiling or sleeping throughout the trip and save the several psychotic drivers and the traffic jam that surely delayed many other southern NAHBS attendees, the drive was uneventful.

For continued NAHBS coverage, that is if you are reading this and not in RVA, I suggest you do the following:

Come To Richmond!

I will be posting photos and write ups and the events go down here in the River City! I look forward to seeing lots of new bikes and old friends.
