Loose Nuts Cycles Soft Opening

Prolly is damn sure right: “Atlanta just got a little hotter.

is having a soft opening this Thursday in celebration of their new storefront at

452 Cherokee Ave “A” in Atlanta.

For some sneak peeks into the shop, check out Brunoj’s photostream.

The GRAND OPENING date is yet to be released. Stay tuned for more info on that soon!

See you there!

Some New Color for Brooks in the USA

My friend Gianmarco of Brooks England sent me this image of some new black railed B-17 Standards.

Give me your opinion on these colors: electric blue, mandarin and apple green.

I am personally a Brooks fanatic and am excited about these new affordable & colorful options.

Previously any saddles offered by Brooks in colors other than brown, honey or black were

neither easy to get a hold of nor particularly easy on the budget. This will soon change!

Look out for more Brooks updates soon!

Ride of Silence & Fulton Flyers New Kits ~ Weds Nite Recap #6

Warm up

Yesterday’s racing began with a somber start.

All riders conducted the organized pacelines in silence with black armbands…

…in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways.

More about this ride of respect & awareness can be found at rideofsilence.org

The racing picked up quick and I only really had a chance to snap several shots of the B field.

The A field was blasted by visiting PRO Phil Gaimon of KENDA Pro Cycling presented by GEARGRINDER

Phil also coaches and runs sharethedamnroad.com. Nice to meet you Phil & I failed to get an action shot!

The Fulton Flyers were out in force and some sweet new kits!  Looking sharp!

Pictured left is Lamar Mauney, president of the Fulton Flyers Development Cycling Club.

FFCC is a non-profit dedicated to the athletic development of young cyclists, and provides financial support

for those riders to attend national and international competitions.

Since 1997, the FFCC has been a driving force in development cycling giving countless young racers the

support and guidance to grow and excel in cycling. Look out for big things from this team in 2010!

One former Flyer turned PRO is Oscar Clark.  Here‘s a recent GSU interview with him mentioning his roots.

Results for the evening are here, more photos here and last week’s recap is here.

See everyone next week!

Once Again, A Week Late: The Keirin Recap & Race Report

On May 8th 2010 Ethic, Inc. hosted ‘The Keirin’ at Dick Lane Velodrome.

Like last year the action was intense, the riders hailed from far & wide & my report on a tardy 7+ day delay!

Above, The Chaz using his head in a Keirin heat against Matt Baranoski.

ETHIC

Another common thread with last year’s Keirin event was that it brought the crowds.

Its always great to see the track packed with spectators and its a sign of attendance for upcoming events!

DLV
The day’s racing started early and the B field was packed.

There were several racers stepping out for their first festival.

One of which was Chris Orosco, pictured below leading out a points race lap.

Throughout the day he earned two firsts and second which qualified him for first overall. Congrats man!

Below is a nice shot of Faster Mustache racer Jason Atwood.

Pictured below is Richie of Sfatto Clothing taking first in the Miss’n’Out & doing some product testing.

Keep up with Sfatto on Facebook. And look out for lots of rad thing coming from these guys this year!

Second and third places in the B’s when to track veterans Darren Comer (right) of the Marlay

& Pete Antonvich (left) of the East Point Track Club. Both pictured below.

The Bicycle Little League races are consistently guaranteed crowd pleasers and

ever more impressive each year to their older peers on the infield.

The most recent Little League events were no different!

IMGP2484

Brody Hartley, Mikey Waine & Annalise Oestreich took 1st, 2nd & 3rd respectively.

Below is Isabella Whitesides taking 2nd in the 3 lap Scratch. Her dad Wayne owns Ethic, Inc.

These young racers have their sights set high

and it won’t be long till we see em racing on Wednesdays and

taking titles here at the track and beyond! Congratulations to all Bicycle Little League racers!

My day started with some nervous apprehension. This marked my first festival competing in the A’s.

Though I had several weeks of Wednesday night A racing under my belt,

I knew this would be alot harder and alot faster.

Warming up with legends like Kent Bostick was both intimidating and inspiring. (pictured right below)

Kent is a Masters athlete in cycling who is still going strong and winning championships in his early 50s,

A prime example of someone not letting age slow him down.  I know he smoked me at half his age!

IMGP2513

The shots above and below were taken by my teammate Stafford Brooke.

He managed to capture a moment in which I was not cracking under the crushing speed of these races.

I walked away with 8th overall and some points.  That is really all I could have hoped for but I aimed high!

Of course, I plan on improving my performance and, as always, have my work cut out for me.

Ape'n it

It was no surprise that Kent took first in the overall A Category Omnium.

Jason Sprouse of of the Asheville Mellowdrome took second.

He set a new World Masters Hour Record (Age 35 – 39) of 45.641 Kilometers in 2007.

and last year’s omnium winner, the Weatherman Dan Holt of Team Type 1, took third overall.

Dan also competed in the Keirin main event too!

Below is another shot by Stafford of Kent Bostick at the finish line of one of our races.

Kent Bostick

At 6pm after a brief intermission, Bill of Thomsen, Ltd. fired up the derny for the highly anticipated Keirin.

IMGP2263

Below is the roster of racers who competed in 4 rounds, 2 heats each leading up the final sprint for glory.

IMGP2301

Scott Patton of Fixed Gear Fever did a phenomenal job announcing all day and introduced each Keirin rider.

Below is T-Town native, Andy Lakatosh who, the night before, tied with Espinoza for the 11.03 200m record.

IMGP2337

Roger “Spiderman”Hernandez of  Nitroshot, was really hamming it up for the crowd and greeting fans.

IMGP2300

Local favorite and Team Type 1 pro racer, Dan ‘Weatherman’ Holt

who even had some fans swooning at his suave style and performance both Friday & Saturday.

IMGP2326

Another local favorite that both worked the crowd and stood his ground was Charles ‘Chaz’ Rossignol.

IMGP2319

Billy “East Point Outlaw” Santana whose smokin hot Tiemeyer bike isn’t pink but his helmet cover is!

Billy

The crowd was ready.

IMGP2356

The racers were ready.

IMGP2358

Steady…

IMGP2352

GO!

Each heat was more action packed that the last with ever more on the line, these guys were ape’n it!

Directly behind the derny above is Giovanni Rey all the way from San Francisco!

He posted a nice write up of the event here.

Leading out below is 17 year old Matt Baranoski. He claimed second overall in the Keirin tournament.

Here is a nice shot of Matt & Giovanni throwing down the gauntlet in turn one.

As reported in the Jordan/Zephyr Need for Speed Sprints Recap, The Affinity team brought the heat!

The Affinity team posted some nice race reports on Day One & Day Two of the Festival.

Heavy hitters

Pictured above is David Espinoza, the Keirin Champion from last year’s Dick Lane Velodrome Keirin event.

He defeated a brutal array of adversaries last year and was determined to once again sprint to the top.

Now riding for Affinity, Espinoza traveled all the way from Breinigsville, PA to defend his title. And he won!

Podium

Pictured above is the Keirin podium. 1st  David Espinoza, 2nd Matt Baranoski  & 3rd  Dan Sullivan.

Congratulations to these dedicated racers and thank you to all who made the trip to come race at the DLV.

A very special thanks to all you made the trip down to spend a Saturday afternoon & evening spectating.

AND a big thanks to the race organizer Jeff Hopkins and all volunteers who made this event even happen!

Full results from day are here. More photos are here. Listen to the action on NPR here.

I hope to see everyone next year at The Keirin!

NACCC Round 3 GoldSprints

The Goldsprints are outside in the back of Star Bar

Last night marked the 3rd installment the Atlanta NACCC Fundraising Goldsprints. I LOVE this shit. 100%!

I have never won a tournament. Always 2nd or 3rd or worse.

Pictured below is yours truly & Seth of Snyder Cycles

Me & Seth

Tonight was my lucky night!

My former East Point Track Club teammates Billy Santana & Brian Tester

did not compete to defend their titles.

Alex vs. Geller

A guy I had previously never met, Geller (pictured above right) , gave me a run for my money!

Bring the heat to the track brother!

John Paul, Matt & Matt

Always a blast!

Got to see my bud John Paul & former classmate Matt Bikeski.

Thank you again Matt & Dean for putting it on! More photos from the event can be found here.

Get Well Daniel & Congrats Stafford
Weds Nite Recap #5

Six Wednesdays & one Pro Race Series into the season and there has already been several spills.

Each adding up to little more that trashed kits and minor track rash.

Tonight my bud Daniel took a nasty spill and as I type is still in the hospital getting checked out.

Get well Daniel and let us know soon how you are doing.

Stafford

On a more positive note, my friend & teammate Stafford took 2nd overall in B’s tonite.

That makes this evening his best night yet this season!

One decisive move was playing his cards right in the Win & Out.

It’ll be 1st  next week man!

IMGP2608

I was lucky to have some very special guests visit me on the infield tonight too!

My wife, Stacey, and son, Otto, came to cheer me on.

It was Otto’s first time to the track and out so late!

He’ll be back! Bicycle Little League on the horizon!

Had some visitors tonight @dicklanevelo #fb

I didn’t take many photos this week but results are here.

I’ve been trying to get a recap of Saturday’s race (I took alot of photos then!) up. That’ll post soon.

In the meantime, the nice guys over at Affinity highlighted their team’s success

on day one & day two of the Festival.

Chris Kelly also as a good write up over at ckdake.com.

My photos from the Keirin are here. …Speaking of Keirin:

Stratton just unveiled the new Keirin Culture site! Looks great! I particularly like the history page!

I first bought my UNO from Stratton way back in 2005. HIDEOUS bar wrap, I know.

Check out the site: http://keirinculture.com

See everyone this weekend at GOLDSPRINTS!

Missing Out &
Making It Happen
WEDNESDAY NIGHT RECAP
INSTALLMENT #4

Listen here

If you don’t pay attention to Jeff’s pre-race instructions you might miss out.
I made this FAIL last week and my attempt at the Win & Out was, yep, a FAIL.
Whereas last week was about not Not Getting Last Place,
this week was about making it happen.
It started with a new bike:

New Bike Day

Stafford’s first night out on his new Kazane was also his best yet.
He made the savvy switch from alloy to double butted 4130 cromoly and is stoked.
The very first B race, the 8 lap scratch, ended in a sprint between Jarek & Stafford.
Stafford placed 2nd in the sprint and earned 3rd overall for the evening.

Stafford

Tonight was Madison night, Billy & Travis won the race.
I politely declined offers to race and continued my procrastination of getting the hang of slinging.
Instead, I spent some time talking to Heath, a photographer for Atlanta Magazine.
Atlanta Magazine has an upcoming article on Dick Lane Velodrome!
Below is Billy Santana in a post Madison sling sprint.

Billy

The highlights for me personally were the Miss & Out and the Tempo.
This is where both the missing out and making it happen mattered to me.
This week is SpeedWeek, which thinned the A category.
Many of the weekly regulars, including the record breaking trio of Joey, Oscar & Thomas of Team Mountain Khakis powered by Jittery Joes, were absent.
I aimed to make the most of this. ; )
I managed to place third in the Miss & Out after spending much of the racing keenly crouched behind Travis with Billy flanking his teammate.
The Tempo, always 25 laps of pain, ended with Daniel, Dan & me ultimately lapping the field.

Miss & Out

Results from are here, more photos are here & last week’s recap is here.
Pictured below are Dan & Valentin in the Madison.

Dan & Valentin

ETHIC, Inc. Presents the Keirin. is right around the corner! See everyone next week!

Athens Twilight & Historic Roswell
3 Crits, 2 Days
Only One Way to Learn.

This weekend is race packed.
With the Twilight events occurring tomorrow in Athens & even more racing in Roswell Sunday,
What better time than now to cut my teeth on criterium racing?
I’ll be racing CAT 5 in Athens & Roswell and also competing in the Fixie Crit as well
Of course, I will taking lots of pictures throughout the weekend but hopefully doing well in my first races too!

A visit with Dustin Klein of
Cadence Clothing

Philipp and I had just left Trouble Coffee and cruised back downtown.

We were running out of daylight and had one more important stop for the day.

Last time I saw Dustin was NACCCs 2007 here in SF.

That was right before i dove headfirst into opening a bike shop.

Two years before that, I had bought my first Cadence shirt.

Fast forward to 2010 and Dustin is still doing what he does best and better than ever.

Its certainly a lair. A workshop. A velo-textile bat cave like no other.

This was peering behind the curtain, behind the scenes.

It was seeing where dozens of precisely practical and uniquely cycling appropriate garments and accessories originate.

We sat down and discussed upcoming projects on the Cadence horizon,

memories and accounts of how much the scene has changed since 2005,

and about the next NACCC being in Atlanta.

I had purchased some arm warmers earlier this year and had managed to rip them.

Of course I brought them with me as I knew I’d be riding alot.

What I didn’t know is that Dustin would repair em right on the spot. Thank you again!

Tucked away in Dustin’s workshop I found several special bikes:

Dustin’s trusty steed I’ve seen him on for years,

this gem in the corner,

a Burley tandem with internal cable routing,

and a R.E. Load Bilenky cargo bike.

Thanks for having us Dustin!

I look forward to seeing you here in Atlanta later this year for NACCCs!

See what is new at  http://cadenceclothing.net

For more photos of Dustin’s shop, check out Anthony’s post from his recent visit on the Velo Cult blog.

TROUBLE COFFEE & COCONUT CLUB
“Be Flexible, I am”

This is the second of several posts I have had pending for almost a month now.

I want to illuminate some of the experiences from my last trip to San Francisco.

Philipp & I owe our stop at Trouble Coffee entirely to Andy of Box Dog Bikes.

And in more ways than one: he lent us the bikes to get us there and gave us the tip to stop by.

I am real glad we did.

front wide

As chance would have it, it was St. Patrick’s day.

That had zero impact on how awesome Trouble was

but did illicit the informative signage stage left above.

coffee bags

Their roast is named Elbow Grease.

Just like after puttin the hurt on some to-do list items and savoring the sweet satisfaction of a job well done.

This coffee brings that same simmering sense of serenity to your cup.

yum.

Tapes at Trouble Coffee

Did I mention they garner an impeccable taste in music?

You wish you could press play, i know you do.

no masks

Another cassette tape and some house rules.

Every brick and mortar business should adopt this common sense head wear ban.

Philipp had a latte. I enjoyed a double espresso.  We both had a slice of cake.

We were halfway through a solid day of SF sightseeing and were both so glad we made it a point to stop by.

Before we departed we spoke with Julietta, the owner.

She saw me snapping away and asked:

“oh no, you’re not gonna blog about this… Are you?”

“yep”

and here it is. : ) Thanks for the great coffee and hospitality!

Head over to their webstore and get a dose of Elbow Grease, monthly or even weekly. Right to your door.

After we left, we headed to pay Dustin Klein of Cadence Clothing a visit...
