Finally ‘Wrapping Up’ My Costello Build, Brooks Leather Bar Wrap

Brooks leather bar wrap.

I have been riding my current commuter set up since January when first I did some riding down in Florida.

The missing piece of the build has been literally right beneath my nose these past few months.

Chris at Loose Nuts had initially wrapped some ever classic Newbaum’s cotton bar tape.

The distinction between Brooks leather wrap and cotton is longevity.

Where many may argue on the aesthetic and style each approach contributes to a build,

the leather simply lasts longer.  Not only that, like all Brooks products, it actually gets better with age.

My Costello

The first step was to pop the cork out of the bars, then flip up the hoods and get in the zone.

Well used Newbaums

Rather than peel of the well used newbaums I opted to double up. Though this potentially could harbor water,

it will make for a bit more cushion and a larger grip. The adhesive gripped well and I slowly began.

Take it slow...

When you see Brooks wrapped bars in the wild, always take a peek and see if it is started and ended well.

This may be the last time the bars will ever be wrapped and its all in the details!

Stoked to line it up top and bottom!

When I was done Chris and Howard took a look. Both know how long it took the get this rig rolling.

Chris doesn't know whether smirk or barf

I am super pleased to finally wrap it up with Brooks leather bar wrap and still sit on my 6 year old Swift!

Brooks products as recently highlighted, are some of the longest lasting velo investments you can make.

New Wrap Day...

Velo-Utilitarianism, the Civia Loring

Stacey on the Civia & Otto on the BoBike

The Civia Loring owes its name to Loring Park, right outside of downtown Minneapolis.

It is no surprise to me that this bike came from such a mecca of velo-utilitarianism.

I mean how many bikes in Minnesota lack a rack or fenders? Any?

This their idea of a track bike and this is how they get to the track.

My point is that riding in Minneapolis requires an even keeled ratio of function and flair.

And that is exactly what Civia achieved with the Loring.

Let’s breakdown the build:

Frameset
Fork Loring Steel
Drivetrain
Crank Truvativ Isoflow 3-piece
Components
Fenders Loring Bamboo
Front/Rear Rack Loring Aluminum/Bamboo
Handlebar Loring Swept 80º

Headset Cane Creek SC-1
Stem Truativ XR 12º rise
Seatpost Truativ XR 350mm
Kickstand Pletscher two-leg
Saddle Brooks B-67
Wheels
Wheel (Front) Civia disc hub, 36-hole, Mavic XM117

Stacey on the Civia & Otto on the BoBike

When I heard my local shop, Loose Nuts Cycles, would be Atlanta’s sole Civia seller, I quickly looked up this new to me name.

My wife, Stacey, and I, spent years on track bikes without brakes much less racks nor fenders.

Now with our son Otto in tow, we desperately needed a dose of velo-utilitarianism.

Reaching for the Loring was a no brainer for us. Well worth the investment.

Comprised of a solid frame, reliable components and all the right accoutrements right out the box.

We’ve since both logged innumerable miles running both Otto and errands around town.

Our first addition was a BoBike Mini. BoBike makes the best bike seats for kids bar none.

This allowed us to keep and eye on Otto as he tagged along. So far he has loved every ride.

And lastly, here’s an albeit outdated bike check from Civia themselves:

Loose Nuts Soft Opening

View from front door

Loose Nuts Cycles had their soft opening timed serendipitously with Cultur‘s road trip stop in Atlanta.

AJ Austin

Riders like AJ Austin, above left in blue ( @ajfaustin ) were in attendance from around the country.

Kareem

Above is Loose Nuts co-owner, Kareem Shehab, he and Chris Tavel have covered a lot of ground recently.

The shop looks freaking fantastic already but there is still a lot to do before the doors open officially.

I arrived around 11 pm and unfortunately missed the bulk of the celebration

but snapped some photos of the shop in its current under construction status.

Late Arrival

I have been stopping by the by this space frequently since the build out began and

the soft opening was the first time that a shop atmosphere was there.

That is to say that the shop already has the relaxed, friendly vibe that many bike shops often never attain.

Chris & Kareem are determined to ensure there is nothing elitist nor overpriced at Loose Nuts.

This should come naturally and I know riders in Grant Park & around Atlanta are stoked in anticipation.

There are several more orders to place and shelves to hang before the Grand Opening.

Maggie & Matt

Loose Nuts Cycles GRAND OPENING Friday June 18th.

Shop will be open at 11 for business.

Party will start around 8.

Come by and have fun!
